Liberal Solutions

The Presidential primary season is in full swing with Obama and Clinton in a knock down drag out fight over... Well I'm not sure exactly what the differences are between them; they both seem to be against the war (at least for now) and they both seem to be for a Universal Health Care System.  They both seem to tout pro minority rights and have ties to lobbyists.  The biggest thing they seem to have in common is the philosophy that government can solve all problems; it’s this ideology that I do not understand.

For as far back as I can remember the term “Government” has been used to describe red-tape, inefficiency and flat out laziness.  When anyone uses the word in this way it is said with a sneer and a disdain that only years of dissolution and unfulfilled promises can bring.  The term is being used with such contempt because I, nor anyone I know, have seen anything to the contrary.  The social programs that we should be so proud of are seen as scams, allowing the lazy to “work the system” while the rest of us “work for the system.”  Even the social equality that out government has tried to create over the past 50 years is seen as reverse discrimination by many.

I do not believe it is a liberal ideal that our government should not be a racist one, but the liberal implementation of that ideal is to create outright racist programs within the government (i.e. affirmative action).  This makes no sense and only breeds a sense of entitlement among minorities and a feeling of disenfranchisement in the majority; dividing us as a whole.  I believe that the government should not strive to force racially equality; instead government should colorblind.  No financial aid, down payment assistance or voter registration application should take race into account, as a benefit or hindrance to the applicator.  This very notion is absurd, yet it is a cornerstone of Liberalism.  With most American’s having no confidence in the government’s ability to accomplish its basic tasks, why do we expect the government to be able to successfully enforce equality or provide healthcare?

Government’s poor reputation is well deserved, evidenced by the fact that we can barely trust our state and federal governments to guard our boarders and maintain our infrastructure, two tasks that are undeniably functions of government, and are undeniably being neglected. Keeping this in mind, how can we expect a government run healthcare system to succeed?  When you have a heart attack would you like your medical care to be handled as well as the Iraq War?  When you’re 6 year old child has an appendicitis do you want their health to be guarded as well as our boarders have been?  When you’re in your last days of life do you want the nursing staff to care for you as well as any town USA has cared for their streets?  All the while wasting money at every turn, in a way that only large bloated and inefficient bureaucracies can… I do not, nor will I ever, understand why we, as a society, would want to put our healthcare in the hands of crooked politicians who routinely carry a 10-20% approval rating.

I don't know the solution, but I do not government is not it...

The Logical Foriegn Policy

George W. Bush was elected in the fall of 2000, which just happened to be my first semester of college and the first election I was eligible to vote in (having turned 18 in the preceding September).  I must admit that I was one of the millions of “un-informed voters” who cast their vote in a similar manner as they choose their lottery numbers (quite a sad admission for a citizen of this great democracy, I must admit).  My mother cast her Republican vote for Al Gore as she advised me that GWB was a war monger and she would not have me go to war, being the only child of a single mother I cannot blame her for her choice.

She, I, nor anyone could have foreseen the incredible events to befall America the following September; I do not believe that my mother’s assessment of GWB was correct but she was, nonetheless, correct about America’s future.  During this period a lot of young American’s took up arms for our country and I am eternally grateful for their sacrifice because as I see it is one’s greatest honor to serve their country, especially in this time of great need.  Over the next several years I became incredibly interested in history all while keeping a close eye on world events and America’s role in the two post 9/11 wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) along with the growing tensions between Radical Islam, Iran, North Korea & America.

During this period the liberal Democratic party has become increasingly disgruntled and seemingly taken the philosophy of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” one step too far in their criticism of Republicans and GWB in particular.  In saying that they have taken that philosophy too far I mean that it seems as if they oppose anything that GWB does, whether it is ultimately good for America or not.  It seems as if they would go to any length to route President Bush, even opposing programs that clearly have America’s best interest in mind and severely hinder the Terrorists ability to conduct war.  They are unintentionally on the side of the terrorists on most issues because of their pure partisan hatred of the President; they would cut off their nose to spite their face.  My point is that there is a War in Washington, not the war against terror, Afghanistan, or Iraq; it’s the war between the Democrats and Republicans, and the fog of war has clouded Washington’s reason & logic.

This fog seems to be greatly clouding the minds of Democrats, as it appears that most of the President’s policies conform to a reaction that I would agree with during a time of war.  In previous times of war our government has infringed upon its citizens most basic civil liberties by enforcing drafts, monitoring inbound and outbound correspondence, creating concentration camps etc… all in the name of self-preservation.  All of which were instrumental in the continuance of this Great Democracy, yet the Democratic Party refuses to admit that we are in a state of war that calls for extreme measures.  Even as our enemies kill, maim & torture our soldiers and threaten our very way of life the liberals seem more concerned with the rights and liberties of our enemies than the lives of our own citizens.  They have forced the Republicans to drag them through this war kicking and screaming and I cannot recall one single productive idea the Democratic Party has proposed for this war.  In the contrary they opposed every effort the Republicans have made to make this world safer for Americans and I can guarantee that when the next 9/11 happens they will most definitely point the finger at the only party making an effort, all in the name of partisanship.  I must note that I have no intention of picking on the Democrats, but the system in Washington that consumes their politics.  I have no doubt that if the roles were switched the Republicans would be guilty of the same illogical partisan hatred.

If our politicians were to step back from the partisan hatred and look at the situation I believe that they would see the clear truths about the world today:

o       This is a new and extreme war that requires new and extreme measures.  We cannot allow the terrorists to get a foothold in American culture.  If known terrorists are contacting people within the U.S. (citizens or not) we should know when, where, why, how often etc… this is not a game of civil liberties but a time of war.  Domestic monitoring of foreign calls is critical in identifying and capturing terrorist cells within our boarders.  Secrete monitoring programs that track terrorists bank accounts and money transfers are critical.  Aggressive interrogations of known terrorists to extract information are critical.  These terrorists have declared war on America;, speak daily about the death of America and, most importantly, THEY HAVE ATTACKED US.  Please make no mistake that this is war and our very way of life is in question.

o       Israel is our biggest ally in the war on Terror, and inversely Iran is the world’s largest supporter of Terror.  The Iranian leader has made his intentions of destroying Israel crystal clear and most disturbing is that Iran is actively trying to obtain nuclear technology.  It is reasonable to believe that if Iran were to succeed that those weapons would surely find their way into the hands of Terrorists and eventually find its way into Israel and ultimately onto American soil.  Iran’s nuclear ambitions must be stopped at any cost.

o       Iran also has a stranglehold on the worlds oil supply through its own oil reserves and those of Venezuela (whom supplies a great deal of oil to America).  The time has come to begin creating the infrastructure to draw oil from America’s vast oil reserves in Alaska, California, and the Gulf; so as to stifle Iran’s stranglehold on America’s oil supply meanwhile paying a great deal of attention to alternative energy sources.  In today’s world, energy policy is foreign policy.

o       Citizens make governments; we must abandon this idea that governments do not represent the ideals of its peoples. If a government is unjust it is the responsibility of its citizens to keep that government in check, all peoples not living with freedom are soldiers fighting for it.

o       We are at war and the enemy’s life and rights are not more important then our own.  The Constitution protects the rights and liberties of American’s, not our enemies.

o       We must protect our boarders.  You can give whatever reason you want but it boils down to this:  The states have relinquished the right to defend their own boarders, subordinating to the Federal Government, and if the Federal Government will not fulfill its end of the bargain then we have a fundamental breach of the contract known as the “Constitution.”

o       No nation has a sound logical reason for nuclear proliferation.  It seems as if the most prevalent argument is that “Who are we (Americans) to say that they cannot have what we have?  What gives us that right?”  My response is this: as a lover of history it is easy to see that humanity has been plagued with evil men and is it so hard to believe that such men are still born today?  Four our own safety we cannot allow nuclear weapons to spread because they will inevitably find their way into the hands of a madman willing to use them.  The second most prevalent reason I hear for country’s to want/need nuclear weapons is for protection (i.e. Mutual Destruction).  To that I say: Since the initial use in WWII the U.S. has not used a nuclear weapon against another country and we have sworn not to.  My question is that if all of humanity has universally condemned nuclear weapons, why do we try to justify the acts of evil men trying to obtain this scourge of humanity?

I believe anyone who has taken the time to concern themselves with recent world events and human history must come to the same (or similar) conclusions; it’s simply common sense.

Fiscal Responsibility in our Elected Officials

It seems clear to me that America’s elected officials, for the most part, have no deterrent to discourage making unsound decisions when related to budgetary issues. That is the only explanation as to why both Democratic and Republican congresses spend more than they make year in and year out, through recessions and times of economic growth. Never has any thought been given to that of the future, our children nor our great grand children. I believe that this mentality has arisen from two main errors in our system; the first of which being that there is no punishment for congressmen to inhibit them from making poor financial decisions and secondly congressional terms are so short that decisions made in office don’t bring their full repercussions until those that made those poor decisions are out of office leaving their successors to deal with the problems created by their irresponsibility.

Not wanting to be one who points out problems without offering some form of solution to the debate I believe that the most effective way to get this country back on the track of fiscal responsibility would be to create short term repercussions to both the congressional and executive branches for unnecessary budget shortfalls. The first example would be to have the salaries of all elected officials in these branches proportionally tied to budget surpluses and shortfalls of a given year, a salary penalty of sorts based upon the fiscal decisions of said branches. This of course should have an override for unforeseen and uncontrollable events that would warrant such a budgetary shortfall (i.e 9/11, The Great Depression, War etc). This override should be very difficult to attain and I would suggest a ¾ override vote by congress and if approved congress must make its case to the Supreme Court for final approval. If approved, said override shall expire in two years time when Congress must then repeat the process again for re-approval. My reasoning for such an unattainable override is simply that you cannot trust a child with the cookie jar and by making the process so difficult it secures this override for only the direst of situations.

It is my dearest of hopes that this is taken to heart and not dismissed as a pipe dream. If my suggested solution does not seem reasonable that is fine, I only wanted to bring something to the table for possible debate; unlike most of our elected officials who would sooner ignore the escalating situation and continue to spend what they, no WE, do not have and leave the mess for our children and our children’s children. Ultimately leaving a financial burden for future Americans that they may not be able to sustain, our parents and grandparents built a house of cards and left it up to us to build a strong foundation for the future. Its not an easy truth to hear but it is just that, the truth; and it may not be fair for us to be put in the position of having to fix the errors of our predecessors but a sacrifice must be made and I learned long ago that the longer you put off a problem for tomorrow the bigger it is tomorrow. Thank you for your time, open mind and careful consideration.

The Rights and Responsibilities of Sovereign Nations and their Peoples.

Tuesday, July 25, 2006

The current state of turmoil in the Middle East has left many American’s grasping the inherit differences between right and wrong. In most complex world events it seems as if there is no clear cut, black and white, distinguishing factors between good and evil; ultimately we are usually left with conflicts consisting mostly of “grey area” in which each side has a logical believable reasoning for provoking conflict. However, in our current situation this is absolutely not the case. The simple fact remains that Israel has exhausted all means of a diplomatic solution; even forcibly removing its citizens and conceding lands to its neighbors as a bargaining chip for peace. Now not one but both of these neighbors have taken this time of so-called peace to do nothing but build up their arsenal in order to attack the State of Israel more ruthlessly than before, using the conceded lands as a staging ground for attacks. The topic of this essay is meant to focus on the Hezbollah militia and the role of the Nation of Lebanon in which they operate. I’ve heard arguments stating that Lebanon and the Lebanese bear no fault in this situation, which has left me questioning the responsibilities of the government of Lebanon and its citizens.

All governments derive their power from the consent of its people, this term rings true to all Americans being as it is a cornerstone to our own Declaration of Independence but I hear time and time again that this simple truth only applies to a Democracy. It is my contention that this is not the case and it is not only a right of the people but their responsibility to rise up against any government that is either abusing its powers for an unjust cause or simply not fulfilling the basic functions of government. If the citizens do not then they are condoning the acts of the government and are just as guilty as the national leadership itself. If the people do stand up against their government then I believe it is the responsibility of the civilized world to aid those rebels in altering or abolishing their current government to allow the citizens to form new government that will secure the basic human rights that we all deserve.

In the case of Hezbollah and Lebanon we have a particularly awkward situation. The government of Lebanon is claiming to be a victim in this situation while Hezbollah continues an assault on Israel. Meanwhile the government of Lebanon is doing nothing to hinder Hezbollah. How could this be? What nation would allow a rouge militia to conduct war within its boarders? The reason for this is that Hezbollah is not some rouge militia as some may believe, in fact it is almost entirely made up of Lebanese citizens and I for one cannot see how the citizens of a country can want war but the government itself claims to be a victim. It may be that Hezbollah is not the majority opinion of Lebanon but if they are truly in the minority then it is still the responsibility of the Government of Lebanon to take a stand against its own citizens and carry out the will of the majority. If Hezbollah is greatly supported by the people of Lebanon then this week’s events are nothing short of a declaration of war by the state of Lebanon. It is the responsibility of the Lebanese to decide which side of this conflict they are on; neutrality is not an option for the State of Lebanon while its citizens are conducting acts of war against Israel.

Israel has every right to defends itself against such outright assaults and until Hezbollah returns the captured soldiers and disarms then I see no reason for Israel to stand down and work towards a path of diplomacy. Being as Israel’s last attempts at diplomacy were great concessions of land that were only used to stage attacks by its enemies, how can any sane being believe that diplomacy would work in favor of Israel this time? The strong swift response is the appropriate one and the State of Lebanon should stand with Israel against Hezbollah if diplomacy is ever to work.

The burden of this conflict falls directly on the shoulders of Hezbollah and the blood of every civilian death, Israeli and Lebanese, is on the hands of Hezbollah. They hold the keys to peace but refuse to use them. The Lebanese government could stand with Israel in ridding Lebanon of this militia and peace would come quickly, but they will not. Yet the world expects Israel to accept these outright acts of war and trust in a diplomatic system that has let them down countless times. I do not nor will I ever understand this logic. The world must stand with Israel against terrorism and if the world will not; it is no reason that America should not.

The world may be afraid of war, as it should be no war is welcomed by civilized nations, but fear is no reason to not go to war. Ultimately in this fight there is a clear good and a clear evil and we cannot negotiate with evil for its promises are empty and its plans are devious. Just before the attack on Pearl Harbor Japan made peace with the United States knowing full well their intentions to bring war to America. When will we start learning from our history? Is the world’s memory so short? I say that Hezbollah and Hamas have shown their true character in this first half of 2006 and must make great concessions to Israel before they could ever be trusted at the table of peace. Until then their total eradication should be the goal of the world. We will not be held hostage by threats of terrorism and radical behaviors, I for one am not afraid of the fight knowing that the alternative is the destruction of civilization as we know it.
